A Literal Glow Up — How Layered Lighting Transformed My Patio Into a Nighttime Sanctuary

I rent. Which means every single design decision I make has to be beautiful, impactful, and completely reversible. No drilling into walls. No hardwiring anything into the backyard. No conversations with my landlord about lighting fixtures.

That constraint has actually made me a better decorator. Because when you can't do things the expensive, permanent way, you get creative. And creative, it turns out, is often better.

This is the story of how I lit my entire outdoor space — pool deck, gazebo, steps, planters, and the pool itself — with zero permanent fixtures. Every light source is solar, battery-powered, or propane. The whole lighting setup cost me under $200. And it looks like this at night.

The secret is layering. Not one type of light. Not one level. Light at the ground, light at table height, light overhead, and light in the water. When you build it in layers, the whole space transforms. Here's exactly how I did it — and everything you see, linked.

The Hardworking Hero: Rattan Solar Lanterns

These are the ones everyone asks about. I have six of them scattered across the pool deck at different heights - on the ground, on side tables, nestled against planters - and the shadow patterns they cast on the concrete are almost better than the lanterns themselves. They do the heavy lifting of creating interest. The rattan weave creates these dramatic, radiating spokes of light that fan out across the patio surface and honestly look like something from a boutique hotel.

They are solar powered, waterproof, and auto-on at dusk. At $14.33 each, they are worth it for the exact right number of them (6) for $85. If you take nothing else from this post, take these.

A note on placement: vary the height. Put some on the ground, some elevated on a surface, one or two raised up on a planter. The same lantern at the same level repeated is just a lantern. Staggered, they become a composition. They also need a full day of direct sun to charge completely — don't tuck them under an umbrella during the day and expect full brightness at night.

The Gazebo: Where the Magic Happens After Dark

I have had this canopy gazebo since 2021, and it is still absolutely killing it. Best Amazon purchase of that year, no contest. I wrapped solar globe string lights along the perimeter inside the canopy. The result is warm, intimate, and a little bit magical. The sheer curtains diffuse the light, and the whole structure glows from across the yard.

Inside the gazebo is phase one of the evening, usually dinner. Then we move to the outdoor sectional I've had for years. It's positioned around the propane fire table, and once that fire is on and there's a movie on the outdoor screen, no one leaves. I throw a chunky knit blanket over the sofa (I have purchased this specific blanket four times since 2022 and have given it to friends — it is that good, get the largest size) and that is essentially our living room from May through October. We also keep a basket full of extra blankies so everyone has something to snuggle.

The marble side tables around the sectional are thrift finds - one set came from the Pasadena Goodwill, and my favorite tabletop came from the Salvation Army in Santa Monica, where we rescued it from a completely unstable base and built it into a custom BBQ. Not everything on this patio has a link, and honestly, that's kind of the point.

For the linens and vintage pieces you see styled on the tables - those came from the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, which, if you are local and have never been, fix that immediately. It runs the first Sunday of every month, and the textile vendors alone are worth the drive.

The Pool: Glow-Up Required

We got these for my thirteen-year-old's birthday, and I've since decided to adopt them as pets. The raccoons avoid them, but my dog is subservient to them; they crack me up. Who doesn't need glowing color-changing swans floating in their pool? They cycle through colors automatically while eliciting giggles, and I love them unreasonably.

The Finishing Details

[CAROUSEL — 2 images, Compact, centered:]

The details that make the whole thing feel finished and intentional:

Step and railing lights. Practical and pretty. These run along the steps and railings and mean nobody is navigating the pool deck in the dark. Subtle enough to disappear during the day, visible enough to actually matter at night. We've tried a few versions and they are not all equal — here's the honest breakdown:

The brightest we've found — great output but on the larger side, so factor that into placement if you want them to disappear during the day.

If your deck or railings are stained wood, these are the ones. Easy to affix, great light, and they sit flush in a way that looks intentional.

The best value of the three. Eight lights for $21 at time of writing, and the light quality is genuinely good for the price. One caveat: on a smooth concrete surface they can get kicked around if you don't secure them. I bought these in 2023 and the ones the gardeners havent accidently buried are still glowing!

Light-up patio umbrella. Solar powered lights built right into the umbrella ribs. Another layer of warm overhead light even when the gazebo isn't the focal point.

Light-up Pool Balls — https://amzn.to/49cOj2s — I'm including these because you'll see them in the photos, but read this before you buy: the batteries died after 2-3 evenings, and if you have a certain kind of kid/teen anywhere near them, what you actually have is a very enticing throwing situation. Peaceful adult patio party with chill kids? Maybe worth the purchase for one night. House full of rowdy teens hopped up on each other and sugar soda? Skip the ball-in-the-face urgent care visit.

Not linked but worth knowing about: marble side tables from Pasadena Goodwill, (a goldmine!), marble BBQ top from Salvation Army Santa Monica, vintage linens from the Rose Bowl Flea Market (rgcshows.com/rose-bowl).

None of this required a single hole in a wall, a single call to an electrician, or one conversation with my landlord. It required thoughtful layering, charging everything during the day, and being willing to style your outdoor space the way you would a room inside your home, with intention, with layers, and with at least one thing that makes you genuinely happy every time you look at it.

Mine are the swans. What's yours going to be?
